What is an HCC Group?¶
HCC uses groups to help organize different research labs, creative activity groups, and classes. These groups are created by faculty members and instructors at the University.
What resources does my group have access to?¶
By default, all HCC groups will have access to:
- Swan - HCC's Supercomputer
- 16,248 CPU cores
- 210 GPUs
- 100 TiB group allocation on the global scratch filesystem
- NRDStor - A storage resource available on HCC resources and University computers.
- 50 TiB group allocation on NRDStor
- NRDStor is accessible from both Swan and computers on campus or connecting to the Global Protect VPN. The latter access is given per request only
- Anvil - HCC's cloud resource for virtual machines.
- Attic - HCC's near-line archive for archiving curated and organized data.
From time to time, HCC resources may be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance or unforseen issues. Upcoming maintenance will be announced ahead of time on the status page and via email. Any unforseen issues will be posted to the status page once HCC staff have established the issue.
Are there costs associated with using HCC?¶
For most HCC resources there is no cost needed.
Swan is free to use in a shared capacity, but there are options to expand resources available through priority access.
NRDStor is free to use and can be expanded on request at no cost by sending an email to hcc-support@unl.edu with justification for the expansion.
Anvil is free to use in a limited capacity and additional expansion is available through priority access.
Attic is the only HCC resource that requires payment upfront at $28 / TB / Year.
How does someone join my HCC group?¶
If a group member needs a new HCC account, they can request one for free at https://hcc.unl.edu/new-user-request . Once the application is made, you will recieve an email to confirm that they are approved to join your HCC group. After the approval and the account is created, the group member will need to set up DUO two factor.
DUO and HCC
HCC is a separate tenant on DUO and DUO will need set up separately from the TrueYou DUO at the University.
If a group member already has an existing account, they can request their account to be added or moved to your HCC group using the form at https://hcc.unl.edu/group-addchange-request . Once the form is submitted, you will recieve an email to confirm that they are approved to join your HCC group. After the approval HCC staff will complete the requested migration or addition.
Important notes about data storage.¶
- Where to store data: HCC has 4 filesystems available for use. Specific details on the filesystems are available on our data storage documentation.
Automatic Inactive Data Purge
Purge policy: The /work filesystem also has a purge policy in place to delete old and unused files to keep the filesystem performant. There is no purge policy on Attic, Home, or NRDStor.
-
Backups: Attic and Home are the only filesystems with backups available.
-
Preventing file loss: It is critical to backup any important data related to your class, creative, or research activities. HCC provides a guide on how to backup important data and prevent file loss.
External Collaborators¶
HCC allows external collaborators to utilize HCC resources for research sponsored by the University of Nebraska campuses.
Evidence of collaboration between NU faculty is required and is subject to annual re-evaluation.
Non-NU users are required to acknowledge collaborations and HCC resource usage in their publications.
More details on this policy are available on the HCC policies page and if you have any questions, please email hcc-support@unl.edu
