The Nebraska Research Data Storage (NRDStor) resource unites the familiarity of a researcher’s desktop environment with HCC’s computing resources. NRDStor is available on HCC’s computing clusters, as well as mountable by researchers on their lab computers and laptops. NRDStor takes advantage of recent upgrades to campus networking that will enable fast data transfers between research labs and NRDStor. Further, the filesystem will be available to all users of HCC, including the four primary campuses in Lincoln, Omaha, the Medical Center in Omaha, and Kearney.
Usage Details
Each group receives a 50TB initial quota. Increases in the quota will be evaluated on demand and merit by the HCC Director and the PI of NRDStor.
Connecting to NRDStor is through the SMB protocol or through direct mounts on HCC clusters, such as Swan. On Swan, NRDStor is available under the path /mnt/nrdstor/. Directions on connecting to NRDStor from your laptop or workstation are available on HCC Documentation.
NRDStor DocsResilience
NRDStor is comprised of 42 data servers. Data stored on NRDStor is stored with an 8+3 system, 8 stripes of data and 3 checksum. The data will be available even with the loss of 4 servers.
NRDStor uses the CEPH filesystem, widely used in industry and academia. Data access is through the SMB protocol, secured over TLS.
Security
Some of the secure features of NRDStor:
- Encrypted at rest The storage is protected with industry standard disk encryption.
- Encrpytion during transit from client. When connected to NRDStor, all data is transferred with TLS
- A campus VPN connection is required when accessing NRDStor off-campus.
