HCC Kickstart 2023

HCC Kickstart is a series of workshops that will give new users a hands-on introduction to accessing and using the high performance computing (HPC) resources provided by the Holland Computing Center (HCC). These lessons are tailored for beginners and require no previous experience.

When: September 21st, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

Cost: FREE!!!

These sessions will be delivered in a hybrid format.

Lights snacks and beverages will be provided in the Prairie Suite. Lunch is NOT provided.

Attendees will need a computer capable of an SSH connection as this workshop will feature plenty of hands-on practice.

Setup and Support

Time available for setting up accounts or troubleshooting issues prior to the day's events.

9:00 am - 9:30 am

Introduction to HCC

Hear about what services HCC offers and what new exciting things are in the works.

9:30 am - 12:15 pm

Introduction to Navgating and Files in Linux

An introduction of the Linux shell including how to navigate the file system and working with text files in a command line environment, such as that found on HCC clusters Swan.

12:15 pm - 1:15 pm

Break for lunch

1:15 pm - 2:40 pm

Introduction to Data Storage and Transfer on HCC

Learn about the different storage systems HCC offers and how to transfer data to and from HCC systems.

2:40 pm - 2:50 pm

Break

2:50 pm - 3:20 pm

Using Software on HCC Resources

Learn how to use software on HCC clusters including preinstalled software.

3:20 pm - 4:00 pm

Running and Submitting Jobs on HCC

Learn the basics of submitting workflows and running applications using HCC resources.

4:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Introduction to Good Practices in HPC

Learn about a variety of good practices when using shared HPC resources to help speed up workflows and increase the efficiency of HPC resources.

4:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Open Questions

Time available for questions about today's events.
