  • 2013-11-07:  HCC Symposium, Thursday Nov. 7th
    Category:  General Announcement

This Thursday, November 7, HCC will hold a local symposium, in conjunction with the fall research fair, from 9am to 3pm. The morning session will be a hands-on tutorial format -- please bring a laptop if you plan to attend. HCC staff will be present to help get new users started and to assist established users with tools to deploy large arrays of jobs. The morning will end with several HCC staff present to assist with topics driven by questions from those in attendance.

Lunch will be provided for those registering, during which Dr. Carl Lundstedt will discuss the CMS project, Big Data, and HCC's role. The day concludes with presentations that detail work with Steve Kolbe (Theatre) and other new developments at HCC: a new Top500 machine, a PetaByte of storage, and improved security measures from Duo. Those present will be eligible for early access to NU's most recently deployed supercomputer.

Further details may be found at https://hcc-docs.unl.edu/display/HCCDOC/HCC+Supercomputing+Symposium+2013. Interested? Please do register to reserve a lunch and also to help us to plan the sessions; come participate in the morning session, join us for the afternoon presentations, or both -- regardless, we hope to see you there.

  • 2013-10-22:  Cooling Failure Aftermath
    Category:  System Failure

The cooling system at PKI suffered a complete outage today forcing a shutdown of Tusker late this afternoon (Oct. 22). Facilities personnel at UNO quickly responded and restored the system to a point where it was possible for Tusker to be brought back online.

An attempt was made to restore the jobs that had been running or pending at the (unplanned) shutdown, but complications required all jobs to be requeued. While I wish the news was better, it does appear the negative affects will be limited to job interruption; hardware damage appears to have been averted. We will of course do what we can to mitigate the problems caused by this outage -- please contact hcc-suport@unl.edu if you have ongoing issues caused by this unfortunate incident.

  • 2013-10-22:  emergency action taken at pki
    Category:  General Announcement

Today at around 4:00 PM, we had a cooling failure at the Omaha PKI
building. We had to take emergency action and pause all running jobs on
the Tusker cluster in order to save the hardware.

It is likely that any running mpi jobs will fail. We are sorry for the
inconvenience, but please re-submit any jobs that fail as a result these
    conditions.

    Our Sincere Apologies,
    Holland Computing Center

  • 2013-10-17:  password changes
    Category:  General Announcement

All HCC users will be required to change their HCC passwords upon next login. This is a standard requirement to enhance security.

Your password will be required to fulfill the following constraints: 8 minimum characters with at least one capital letter, one lower case letter, and one number included. I apologize for what I view as a necessary nuisance.

    Best regards,
    David
