  • 2014-04-11:  URGENT: Tusker /work cleanup required
    Category:  Maintenance

This announcement concerns only the /work filesystem on Tusker.

/work on Tusker is nearly overrun -- there is an urgent need to remove any unnecessary files from /work as soon as possible. We prefer this to be voluntary. In any case, the system must remain useable and we will take action as necessary (details via link).

/work on Tusker is nearly overrun -- there is an urgent need to remove any unnecessary files from /work as soon as possible.

By design Lustre (/work) contains multiple storage pools that function in parallel. Several of these are now full, and
it is all but certain jobs will fail this weekend if space is not freed up. The following is the algorithm we will employ
if voluntary removal of files is not sufficient to allow continued functioning of Tusker (e.g. jobs fail).

The groups with the largest consumption of space will have files removed first. If your group is currently consuming over 15 TB on /work, it is possible your group will have files deleted. We will attempt to remove oldest files first, but size of file is also relevant.

This is a problem that reflects no misuse of the system -- the shared storage is simply being utilized by a growing number of groups. This, however, necessitates more regular cleanup, and we prefer this to be voluntary. In any case, the system must remain useable and we will take action as necessary.

  • 2014-04-03:  Open Science Grid Summer School -- FREE! if accepted
    Category:  General Announcement

Applications for the 2014 OSG User School are due soon. To make it easier
to apply, we extended the application deadline as late as possible: Sunday,
April 13th. But there is no reason to wait ... apply today for acceptance
to the School and for financial support!

ANNOUNCING THE 2014 OPEN SCIENCE GRID USER SCHOOL!

If you could access thousands, maybe millions of hours of computing, how
would it transform your research? What discoveries would you make?

We are looking for qualified students to attend the 2014 Open Science Grid
(OSG) User School, where they will learn how to use high throughput
computing (HTC) to harness vast amounts of computing power for research.

Using lectures, discussions, roleplays, and lots of hands-on work with OSG
experts in high throughput computing, students will learn how HTC systems
work, how to run and manage many jobs and huge datasets to implement a full
scientific computing workflow, and where to turn for help and more info.

Worried about costs? Successful applicants will get financial support to
attend the OSG School (July 7-10) at the beautiful University of Wisconsin
    in Madison.

Ideal candidates are science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) graduate students whose research demands large-scale computing.
Also, we will consider applications from faculty, staff, and advanced
undergraduates, so make a good case for yourself!

    IMPORTANT DATES

Application Period: March 10 - April 13 (EXTENDED!)
    OSG User School: July 7-10

  • 2014-03-14:  Downtime for Crane: March 20th, 2014
    Category:  Maintenance

Jobs which cannot complete before March 20th at 9:00am will be held in queue until the maintenance is complete. We anticipate this work will be finished by 6:00pm the same day.

To minimize impact to running jobs we are declaring a downtime for Crane to complete this work. We will use this maintenance window to update various software components across the cluster. The Crane login node will also be updated and will require users to log off. Users will be denied access to the Crane login node until the maintenance is completed.

  • 2014-01-24:  Duo sign up at East Campus 2pm 1/24/2014
    Category:  General Announcement

Several HCC staff will be at a table near the bowling alley in the East Campus Union from 2pm until at least 3pm to help HCC users who need Duo authentication to be enabled. Please bring your laptop and smart phone if possible! Several appointments already exist; this message hopes to add convenience for a few more East Campus users.
