  • 2014-01-16:  Duo required for future HCC logins
    Category:  General Announcement

An HCC user account's information was recently stolen. In this case, a remote machine was compromised, and a login ID and passwd obtained. All evidence is that the account was not able to escalate privileges beyond user level. Currently login to Sandhills and Tusker is disabled while final tests are performed. This attack would have been thwarted by Duo 2-factor authentication.

I have thus directed that password-only login to HCC machines be disabled immediately. Starting today, all HCC machines (Crane, Tusker and Sandhills) will require Duo two-factor authentication for access. This will require either a smart phone or one can obtain a yubikey for a small fee ($15). Details concerning Duo security may be found here:

    https://hcc-docs.unl.edu/display/HCCDOC/Setting+up+and+using+Duo

We will set up accounts face to face; HCC staff both in Lincoln (Schorr 118) and in Omaha (PKI 152) will be available from 9am to 5pm to sign up users for Duo authentication. We will further have a staff member at UNMC most of the day tomorrow (details to be mailed), and are willing to come to your lab, or at least your part of campus, upon request. You may follow this message at the HCC web site for further updates. (http://hcc.unl.edu/hcccreditedit/messages.php)

This is not my preferred time frame to implement this; I realize this is sudden. However, we have suffered several similar attacks recently which would have been thwarted by Duo 2-factor authentication. A single Duo sign on will work for all HCC machines. Those signed up already for Crane are already all set. The trade off is immediate nuisance verses the ongoing risk of yet another stolen account -- in the latter case, the worst case scenario is well beyond inconvenience.

*Please bring a laptop when you come to sign up so we can immediately verify your access.*

Our intent is to do all we can to move forward as quickly as possible with this process. In the case of off-campus colleagues we will find a work around on a case by case basis. For most users, it will be quick and easy to add this second factor via the Duo Security app on their smart phone.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact us at hcc-support@unl.edu.

***If you have a hard deadline or other immediate need please contact me directly and I will work with you to find a solution. My contact info is included below.***

    Sincerely,
    David Swanson

  • 2014-01-08:  Position opening at HCC
    Category:  General Announcement

Nebraska has an opening for a Linux System Administrator in our HPC
center, Holland. The position is in Lincoln, NE. Could you please
forward this on to the various lists you know of where an interested
party might be found? Although the website lists Dec 18 as the review
date we have not yet begun to review applications.

    https://employment.unl.edu/postings/37901

    Description:
Position will be required to maintain Holland Computing Center (HCC)
core resources including, but not limited to, LDAP and group CMS
(Content Management System), provide resolution to user issues, support
and maintain user authentication mechanisms and work with (HCC) staff to
maintain systems security integrity. Position will be expected to keep
up on industry security announcements and coordinate with other HCC
staff to appropriately respond to maintain system security and high
availability. Various tasks including the following will be required:
maintaining and upgrading hardware, operating systems, and related
aspects (networking, storage, computing) of various systems; performing
backups; managing user accounts; installing new software (commercial and
    public domain); maintaining system security; monitoring system usage;
evaluating, recommending and/or negotiating specific hardware purchases.
    HCC systems are integrated with national computational grids;
installation and maintenance of grid protocol software will be required.
Supervision, distribution and coordination of tasks for graduate and/or
undergraduate students often expected. Position works in cooperation
with other University staff and researchers associated with research
computing. Since this is a research oriented position, a curious,
self-motivated individual who can operate successfully without
procedural details already established is essential; good problem
solving skills needed. Position requires frequent and effective
communication of technical, operational and educational information in a
variety of formats. Periodic travel between NU campuses (UNO, UNMC, UNL)
    is required.

  • 2014-01-03:  Firefly data no longer available
    Category:  General Announcement

This concerns only users with data previously stored on the former Firefly cluster.

Firefly is not only retired, it is disassembled. This retirement was announced last July and finalized last August; this is a final courtesy announcement. Perhaps it is more of a historical footnote -- no request for access has been received in the last several months. Any remaining hope of retrieving any data from Firefly will end next week.

If you actually want to retrieve data from what was once Firefly, please contact hcc-support@unl.edu immediately. It will either become completely unavailable, or the old hardware it is currently stored on will completely fail, no later than Jan. 10.

The old Panasas gear that stored Firefly data proved to be extremely reliable and long-lived. Alas, it is proprietary, requires expensive software support (no longer current) ... and its formerly robust hardware is failing left and right. It's well past time to pull the plug.
